     การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาคุณค่าที่มีต่อสังคมของประเพณีเช็งเม้งในเมืองหาดใหญ่ ทั้งด้านเศรษฐกิจ วัฒนธรรม  ศีลธรรม และศาสนา โดยวิธีวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ เก็บรวบรวมข้อมูลจากเอกสารและภาคสนาม โดยสังเกตและสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึก ผู้ให้ข้อมูลหลัก ได้แก่ ชาวไทยเชื้อสายจีนที่มีภูมิลำเนาเดิมในหาดใหญ่และมีความรู้ในประเพณีเช็งเม้ง               ผู้ทำพิธีกรรมเช็งเม้ง ผู้ประกอบการค้า จำนวน 20 คน รวมไปถึงผู้ให้ข้อมูลรองคือ กลุ่มชาวบ้าน 4 คน นักท่องเที่ยว 2 คน พ่อค้าแม่ค้า 5 คน รวมทั้งหมด 11 คน

     ผลการวิจัยพบว่าประเพณีเช็งเม้งมีคุณค่าด้านเศรษฐกิจ โดยช่วยเพิ่มรายได้ให้กับกลุ่มพ่อค้า แม่ค้า ผู้ให้บริการเกี่ยวพิธีกรรมเช็งเม้ง นอกจากนี้ยังส่งเสริมด้านอุตสากรรมการท่องเที่ยว ไม่ว่าโรงแรม ร้านอาหาร สถานที่ท่องเที่ยวที่มักมีการรวมกลุ่มเดินทางหลังพิธีกรรมเสร็จสิ้น เป็นการพยุงฐานะทางเศรษฐกิจของอำเภอหาดใหญ่ที่ปัจจุบันอยู่ในสภาวะฝืดเคือง                มีคุณค่าด้านวัฒนธรรมจากการที่ไทยคนเชื้อสายจีนในเมืองหาดใหญ่ร่วมรักษาอัตลักษณ์ของตนไว้อันนำไปสู่ความเข้มแข็งในหมู่สังคมชาวทยเชื้อสายจีน การร่วมพิธีกรรมช่วยให้คนรุ่นใหม่เรียนรู้ที่จะสืบสานต่อไป มีคุณค่าด้านศีลธรรมและศาสนา ประเพณีเช็งเม้งยังช่วยเสริมคุณธรรมด้านความกตัญญู การช่วยเหลือเกื้อหนุนกัน ความผูกพันในครอบครัว จิตสำนึกในการเคารพ                ผู้อาวุโส รวมถึงการตอกย้ำความมีจิตศรัทธาในศาสนาท่ามกลางการเปลี่ยนแปลงของสังคมเมืองหาดใหญ่ แม้จะมีการปรับเปลี่ยนพิธีกรรมบ้าง แต่ในด้านคุณค่าโดยเฉพาะความกตัญญูรู้คุณต่อบรรพบุรุษยังไม่เสื่อมคลาย

       The objective of this study was to explore values of the tradition of Ching Ming festival towards the Hat Yai society in the economic, cultural, moral, and religious aspects. The data of this qualitative research were collected from documents including fieldwork through observations and in-depth interviews. The primary informants were Thai of Chinese origin whose hometown was in Hat Yai city, who had knowledge of the Ching Ming tradition and who were Ching Ming festival performers totaling 20 people and the secondary informants were a group of 4 villagers, 2 tourists and 5 merchants totaling 11 people.
      Findings of the study revealed that the Ching Ming tradition has an economic value by helping increase income to merchants and service providers in the Ching Ming tradition. In addition, it helps promote the tourism industry, whether it is hotel or restaurant. The tourist attractions are the places where people get together to travel for pleasure after the end of the festival. The festival helped sustain the Hat Yai district economic position which had been in a sluggish economy. It has a cultural value as Thai of Chinese origin have preserved their identity leading to strengthening the Thai Chinese society. Participation in the festival helps to make the new generation learn to inherit the tradition which has moral and religious values. The Ching Ming tradition helps promote the virtue of gratitude, support each other, engage the family, get a conscious mind of respect for elders, and helps reaffirm faith in religion amid changes of the Hat Yai society. Despite some modifications of the ritual, the values especially in gratitude to ancestors prevail unceasingly.
