การศึกษาวงพิณพาทย์เมืองจำปาศักดิ์สาธารณรัฐประชาธิปไตยประชาชนลาว : กรณีศึกษาบ้านพระพีน

                      The purposes of this study were: 1) to investigate the current state and role of Prapeen village gamelan orchestra, Champasak province, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, 2) to examine the style of playing the gamelan orchestra for the ceremony of offering food to city gods in the shrine performed by town people. The study methodology employed qualitative approach by field survey using questionnaire, interview, focus group and observation leading to data synthesis. The findings disclosed as follows: 1) The Prapeen village gamelan orchestra, Champasak province used to be a band which played regularly at the residence of Champasak city. Until 1975, there was a coup in Laos. The gamelan band, then, was used in general traditions and ceremonies. The gamelan instruments were kept in the music hall, Prapeen village club, Champasak province. At present, there are 8 musicians under the supervision of Mr. Boonkoet Pommasing. The kinds of music instrument showing in public will be percussion which consists of alto xylophone, alto bamboo xylophone, khongwongyai, tabor, double-headed drum, flute and small cymbals. The role of gamelan band in Prapeen village, Champasak province was to play for common rites regarding the residents’ beliefs and for religious ceremonies. 2) The play of gamelan orchestra for offering food to city gods in the shrine is very important. The gamelan band has a role in playing for the rites from the beginning to the end. The gamelan band used in the ceremony consists of alto xylophone, alto bamboo xylophone, Khongwongyai, alto iron xylophone, tabor, double-headed drum, flute, and small cymbals as well as Saeng. The purpose of the play is to please the goods of Champasak through the god mediums – Mae-Laam and Pho-Chang by using the music as a way of contact. The music played in the event comprises these songs: Phleng Klom, Phleng Krao-nok and Phleng Orathai which are very important to the rite. The rite is yearly held during the beginning days of March in the Prapeen village club, Champasak province by using the dancing hall as a place for the venue. The residents will offer oblation through the god mediums – Mae-Laam and Pho-Chang.
